Jessie Dettwiler is a cellist and vocalist based in Portland, Oregon.  She performs, collaborates, tours and records with a number of indy,  folk-rock, chamber-pop, and chamber-rock bands.

Beginning at age five with piano lessons, Dettwiler moved on to the cello at age 7 and voice shortly after that. She was classically educated in music throughout her childhood  in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She studied cello with Assistant Principal cellist of the Colorado Symphony, Dr. Matt Switzer for a number of years, starting in 1993.  Dettwiler continued her classical education over the next decade with numerous teachers, ensembles and youth orchestras.

From 2004 – 2006 she studied music at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. During this time Dettwiler joined her first band and met Stirling Myles, who would become a long-time music collaborator . The band recorded a single album then moved to Portland, Oregon to pursue a music scene with more opportunities.

Dettwiler has shared a concert bill with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Basia Bulat, Adrian Belew, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, The Bad Plus, Rasputina, Horse Feathers, Lisa Papineau, The Moth and the Flame, Ryan Sollee of The Builders and the Butchers and many more. From her work as a studio musician, she can be heard on albums by  Sara Jackson-Holman, Imaginary Friend (Kina Grannis and Jesse Epstein’s project) and Grass Widow among others.  She still exercises her classical education, performing for weddings, business events and galas.

“The string work by cellist Jessie Dettwiler is nuanced and grounded, lending an element of continuity throughout the album [Procession] that exemplifies the soulful restraint that is Alameda’s hallmark.”  – Charles Trowbridge, Eleven PDX Magazine
